According to reknowned Times' art critic, Robert Huges, Aboriginal art is:

" The world's last great art movement".

There is a certain irony in his remark when one considers that traditional Aboriginal rock art is, in fact, the oldest form of art known to man. The contemporary Aboriginal art movement is, however, very new.   Traditional Aboriginal art was first translated into the contemporary medium of oils or acrylics on canvas in approximately 1980.  The development of works on canvas over the past twenty-five years has been astounding. This makes the very contemporary look and feel of the imagery employed by some of the leading Aboriginal artists, even more remarkable. Aboriginal art serves as Indigenous iconography - a story book; a map; and a visual history of indigenous people and their harmonious relationship with their land.
